About Harry

Henry Douglas, known to friends as Harry, was born on May 1, 1887 in the district of Ayr, Scotland to Edith McKinnell Douglas and Henry Douglas, a slater by trade. In the early twentieth century as a young teenager, Harry emigrated to the northeastern United States near Quincy, Massachusetts where he worked at a number of trades and learned the skills of masonry, bricklaying and plastering. In 1917 at age 30, Harry joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force where he served as a Lance Corporal in the 6th Battalion 2nd Canadian Engineers in France, Belgium, and Germany. Discharged from the Military on May 27, 1919, he returned home to Quincy where he met and married Agnes Mylott. Together, they moved to New Jersey and New York and raised two daughters, Edith and Nancy. Harry became a naturalized citizen of the United States of America on June 13, 1941.

Though not formally educated, Harry was well informed and well read. He was known to read the encyclopedia from cover to cover. He never missed his daily newspaper and always had a book or puzzle in his lap. He enjoyed editing others’ work, creating word puzzles, and savoring his daily glass of Ballantine Ale. Importantly, Harry was never without his pipe and can of sweet smelling tobacco. Hence, the press’s logo. Harry Douglas died on May 24, 1965 in Miami, Florida.

We know Harry would love the publishing business.
